EVP, Chief Human Resources Officer

Alfonso Martinez serves as executive vice president and chief human resources officer of NII Holdings, Inc., a provider of differentiated mobile communication services for businesses and high value consumers in Latin America. With operations in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Chile, NII is a Fortune 500 company and trades on the NASDAQ market under the symbol NIHD.

Mr. Martinez is responsible for developing and implementing human capital strategies and practices to improve the company’s performance domestically and globally. He also oversees all human resources functions, ranging from talent management, succession planning, compensation, employee engagement and communications, and organizational effectiveness.

Mr. Martinez joined NII in December 2008. Prior to joining the NII team, he was group vice president of global talent for Sodexo, an international leader of integrated food and facilities management services. In his role at Sodexo, he was responsible for designing the framework for global talent management and the development of performance management and succession planning for the top 600 executives in the 80 countries where the company operated. . Mr. Martinez also served as senior vice president of human resources Corporate Services, a division of Sodexo that generated $1.5 billion in revenues and had 20,000 employees working across different U.S. domestic geographic locations.

As an advocate of corporate responsibility, Mr. Martinez also represented Sodexo in several not-for-profit external organizations, including the National Hispanic Corporate Council, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, and the Hispanic College Fund and Catalyst. He also served as a high-ranking official for the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility in Washington, D.C. and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, among others. Prior to his time at Sodexo, Mr. Martinez held various positions in the human resources field, spending 15 years at Marriott International in a number of key operational positions, which included hotel regional management, national level revenue and pricing management, and leading a centralized human resources function servicing 500 hotels throughout the United States.

Mr. Martinez earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Denver School of business and a master’s degree in organizational development from Johns Hopkins University. He is a certified MBTI facilitator and professional executive coach.
